Technology and its Influence on Solid Waste Management: A Systematic Literature Review 2019- 2024

The present study utilizes the method of systematic literature review of research papers that address arguments about technology and its influence on solid waste management between the years 2019 and 2024. To achieve this, the information search began using the variables "technology" and "solid waste management" within the Scopus database. Filters were then applied that met the criteria established for each category in terms of access type, publication stage, time frame, language, subject area, and keywords. Following this, exclusion criteria were applied to obtain a reliable set of 19 articles. The results indicate that the influence of technology on solid waste management is positive, as it contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), improvement in air and soil quality, and the preservation of natural resources through the application of automated systems, waste conversion processes, and recycling. Additionally, the year with the highest number of scientific publications on the topic was 2023. The most frequently highlighted keywords were urban solid waste, waste management, and sustainable development. Countries such as India, Malaysia, and Italy have the highest percentage of scientific article production, indicating that Latin America needs to delve deeper into this topic. In conclusion, the studies demonstrate the potential of mathematical optimization, assignment and routing models, and geographic information systems (GIS) to optimize the collection, transportation, and treatment of solid waste, improving efficiency and sustainability.
