Electromagnetic Compatibility Plan for the Compact Muon Solenoid Detector at Cern

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the four high-energy physics experiments under construction at CERN for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator. The electronic read-out of the CMS calorimeter is designed to process signals of a few mV and digitise them synchronously at 40 MHz. Part of this electronics is located inside of a uniform magnetic field of 4 Tesla. This experiment requires around a half megawatt of power to operate and is supplied by about 5000 power supply units. The characteristics above mentioned have forced us to analyse and formulate EMC rules to integrate the detector in a safe way. The paper presents the EMC plan and tests to be applied in CMS before the installation and commissioning of the electronics system.
