Observation of a rare beta decay of the charmed baryon with a Graph Neural Network

The beta decay of the lightest charmed baryon <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math> provides unique insights into the fundamental mechanism of strong and electro-weak interactions, serving as a testbed for investigating non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics and constraining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix parameters. This article presents the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msubsup> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> <mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:math> , utilizing 4.5 fb^-1 of electron-positron annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector. A novel Graph Neural Network based technique effectively separates signals from dominant backgrounds, notably <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msubsup> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi> <mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:math> , achieving a statistical significance exceeding 10σ. The absolute branching fraction is measured to be (3.57 ± 0.34_stat. ± 0.14_syst.) × 10^-3. For the first time, the CKM matrix element <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>V</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:mrow> </mml:mfenced> </mml:math> is extracted via a charmed baryon decay as <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mn>0.208</mml:mn> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.01</mml:mn> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>exp.</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.00</mml:mn> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mn>7</mml:mn></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>LQCD</mml:mi></mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>±</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0.00</mml:mn> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>τ</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:msubsup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi></mml:mrow> <mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow> </mml:msubsup> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:math> . This work highlights a new approach to further understand fundamental interactions in the charmed baryon sector, and showcases the power of modern machine learning techniques in experimental high-energy physics.
