Validation of dynamic response of a 2-MW hybrid-spar floating wind turbine during power production

Abstract Accurate estimation of the dynamic response of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) are essential for the design and development of FOWTs to ensure their safety and reliability. Up to now, extensive efforts for the development of design tools for FOWTs have been made, and nowadays several design tools are available. The simulation tools have been validated using water tank experimental data and comparisons between codes. Although validation using full-scale FOWT has been performed, there are few published literatures publicly available. In this paper, we describe a simulation of the dynamic response of a 2-MW spar-type FOWT during power production in an actual sea area. Simulation of the dynamic response of FOWT in a power production state is described using Adams with SparDyn which has already been validated by simulations and measurements during typhoon in actual sea areas. Five cases were selected from low to high wind speed range during power production. Numerical simulations were performed using time-series data of wind speed, wind direction, wave height, wave direction, current speed and current direction obtained during power production. Comparisons have shown good agreement between the simulated and the measured values. The effect of tower shadows was also examined.
