Comparison of synthetic and natural binders supporting formation of granulated activated carbon

Granulated activated carbon (GAC) is sorbent widely used in many areas. Various carbon matrices and different additives are used for its production. Binders are one of the most important components in the manufacture of GAC. So far molasses was the most popular granule-binding agent but recently the access to it is limited. Therefore, research was carried out on the application of binders substitutes. Synthetic fructose syrup (SFS) produced from natural sweeteners extracted from fruit waste and an efficient cellulose polymer gel (PCM) were chosen for the study. Low PCM concentrations did not allow the formation of granules. Carbonised coals with SFS syrup had very high mechanical strength. The addition of PCM as a binder for coal granulation in the comparison of the analysed binders did not allow the development of a high BET surface area. BET values for coal with molasses were also lower than for SFS. Based on the tests carried out, it was determined that up to positive results were achieved for SFS in terms of both granulation efficiency and porous surface development, and therefore, after additional testing and certification, coal with the addition of SFS can be implemented in the production of GAC.
