Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Cooling Channel Parameters on Thermal Performance for Electric Vehicles Using Cylindrical Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract Electric vehicles are gradually replacing traditional cars because of their superiority in not emitting exhaust gases into the environment during operation. The most essential and heat-sensitive part of an EV is the battery. It is therefore essential to construct a temperature control mechanism for the battery module. This study employs a liquid cooling system for the research of lithium-ion battery modules. The simulation investigates how variations in the cooling channel’s width, height, and inflow velocity impact the thermal performance of a 24-cell battery configuration with surrounding cooling channels. The cooling channel’s maximum temperature and temperature differential are maintained below 302 K and 5 K when the inflow velocity is greater than 0.15 m/s. The channel diameter is 3 mm, which optimizes space utilization while ensuring optimal cooling. Furthermore, a channel height of 62 mm provides consistent cooling across all areas of the cell. With the increase of the inlet velocity, channel width, and height, the heat dissipation performance of the battery module has improved quite a lot, but the impact on pump consumption has not been considered.
