Short wavelength division mulitplexed (SWDM) optical backplane for avionics (Conference Presentation)

This work aims to provide an important solution for the avionics communications industry, addressing the critical need for increased data bandwidth and resilience in harsh environments. We introduce an optical backplane utilizing wavelength division multiplexing across the 850 to 940 nm band. The backplane is based on planar lightwave circuits with broadband multiplexing components and couplers to multimode fiber arrays. Here, we present the design and fabrication of these components and their integration into an optical backplane compatible with industry standards.
