Enhancing stability of power grids with high levels of inverter-based generation using a novel control technique

The rise of renewable energy and HVDC transmission systems poses significant stability challenges to power grids. The decline of synchronous generators, with their inherent inertia, and the increasing dominance of inverter-based technologies exacerbate these issues, particularly in weak grids with low short-circuit ratios. To address these challenges, Power Nova Technology Ltd has developed Unified Advanced Vector Control (UAVC), a software-based solution that enhances grid stability without the need for extensive hardware upgrades. EMT simulations have demonstrated UAVC's effectiveness in improving grid performance, including enhanced fault ride-through capability, increased grid capacity, harmonic resilience, and dynamic frequency response. While some limitations, such as handling simultaneous frequency and fault disturbances still exist, UAVC represents a promising advancement in managing low-inertia grids. It offers a scalable and cost-effective solution for enhancing grid resilience and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources.
