Nanocrystalline CMC Inductors for EV Charging: Trade Studies and Testing Standardization

Recent advances in charging of electrical vehicles (EVs) places increasing demands on electromagnetic interference (EMI) mitigation, with common mode choke (CMC) inductors playing an important role. In this digest, we discuss a trade study of nanocrystalline and ferrite-core CMC inductors for specifications relevant for on-board EV charging, and we highlight a significant advantage of nanocrystalline solutions in terms of size and weight. Designs are pursued considering electrical and thermal performance requirements with both custom and commercially available cores. Conclusions of trade studies and presented designs are validated through both detailed characterization of commercial CMC inductors. Needs for standardization of testing of cores and inductors are also discussed, with testing to existing standards codified through data sheets made available publicly to designers and end-users.
