Advantages of Integrated Modeling for Surface and Subsurface Systems in Development Strategy Optimization

This paper addresses the limitations of traditional uncoupled reservoir and surface network models by presenting an overview of an integrated model for reservoir coupling involving four field dynamic models operating with a common surface network. The integrated model is used for field development planning and optimization studies, including the design and timing of compressors, ensuring more accurate forecasts and cost-effective solutions. The integrated model combines reservoir dynamics, wells, and surface network models using the advanced unified system of equations. Unlike traditional approaches, where reservoir and surface network models are considered separately, the integrated model enables the inclusion of backpressure effects from surface network equipment and pipeline systems on well performance and tubing head pressure. This holistic approach offers a more accurate forecast of the entire system's performance and enhances the planning of capital and operational costs. In this work, four fields were coupled into an integrated model operating with a common network. Based on the developed model and the obtained results, an approach was proposed for selecting the optimal operating mode and design for a network compressor unit. As a result, the optimal compressor design was determined, and the consolidated production profile was refined. These results would not have been possible without the integrated model, which provides a more comprehensive understanding of system interactions. This outcome can be used to master the asset development strategy, enabling more informed decision-making. The integrated model also supports further system optimization, offering a valuable tool for continuously improving production efficiency from the reservoir to the processing facility.
