Accountability and Economic Witness in the Iona Community

This article examines the economic witness of the Iona Community, following an earlier analysis from academics in the field of accounting. I argue that the Economic Witness needs to be read with regard to who was not able to participate – laypeople and women to understand its development. Further, I outline how the economic witness has a liberative effect that reaches beyond the members of the Community through its rooting in the larger five-fold Rule of the Community. I conclude that the practice of accounting in the Community is not directed to oneself but to re-orientating ourselves towards peace, justice and integrity in the world.
