Sustainable Bridge Bearings and Expansion Joints

<p>In the pursuit of sustainable infrastructure solutions, the development and application of environmentally friendly materials and technologies are paramount. Bridge bearings and expansion joints play critical roles in ensuring the longevity and safety of bridge structures. This paper explores the innovative use of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) in bridge bearings as a superior alternative to Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).</p><p>In parallel, the study examines the implementation of hybrid expansion joints in bridge design. These joints utilize steel profiles with a top nose made from stainless steel, which significantly extends their service life by an estimated 10 years.</p><p>Through a comprehensive analysis of the material properties, economic benefits, and environmental implications, this paper advocates for the adoption of UHMWPE bridge bearings and hybrid expansion joints as sustainable innovations.</p>
