Understanding Polarization Dependent Loss in Passive Silicon Photonic Components

This paper introduces a practical approach to comprehending polarization dependent loss in silicon photonic circuits. Polarization in silicon photonic circuits arises from the mathematical solutions derived from Maxwell's Equations that illustrate the electric field orientation determines the spatial distribution of electromagnetic fields in light guiding structures. Further, the topic of polarization affecting eigenmodes is particularly challenging for those pursuing associate degrees, in which such mathematical rigor is often unnecessary. Consequently, there is a need for alternative teaching methods tailored to students aspiring for technician roles in advanced fields like integrated photonics. These new methods aim to impart technical knowledge and skills aligned with industry requirements. Effective teaching strategies often incorporate hands-on activities to reinforce both theoretical concepts and practical skills. The hands-on activity described in this paper focuses on enhancing understanding of polarization in silicon photonic circuits by examining polarization dependent loss in various circuits. Specifically, this paper introduces both the All-states and Mueller method to educate students exploring the practicality of polarization dependent loss in silicon photonic circuits.
