Tailoring and Encoding GHz Peregrine-like Solitons via External Programming

Peregrine solitons (PSs), from fundamental and practical perspectives, have the potential to reveal nonlinear optical physics and lead to ultrashort laser pulses. Despite this promising outlook, PS generation and manipulation from fiber laser cavities, as well as its potential for the achievement of ultrahigh repetition rates, have not been much investigated. In this work, we propose and realize a tailored Peregrine-like soliton (PLS) generation method from a fiber laser cavity via external programming, giving rise to a 111 GHz repetition rate. Various temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of the GHz PLS pulse sequence can be tailored and obtained by programming the injecting signal. The precise locking relationship has been revealed between the injecting signal and the emission evolution dynamic. Inspired by this principle, binary and quaternary text and graphic information storage have been demonstrated through emitted temporal manipulation. The idea employed in this work, without the assistance of a saturable absorber, demonstrates a novel ultrahigh repetition rate soliton sequence generation mechanism in a fiber laser cavity that is previously inaccessible to address issues of low system stability and poor emission manipulation precision. Furthermore, we show that it can be successfully exploited for the programmable generation and high-capacity all-optical storage of gigahertz-rate soliton sequences.
