A clinical retrospective survey on a multicomponent medical device for managing patients with nasal symptoms

BACKGROUND: Nasal washing is a standard therapeutic option to clean the upper airways to remove abundant secretions and harmful substances. An isotonic saline solution, containing Barrymyrrh®, is available as nasal spray. This medical device (MD) is indicated for relieving nasal symptoms common to different upper airway diseases (infectious rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, acute and chronic rhinosinusitis); to promote mucus clereance and counteract nasal dryness.METHODS: A survey evaluated the patient reported outcomes of subjects with nasal symptoms. Symptomatic patients used the MD one to two times a day up to seven days. The primary outcome was a decrease on TNSS and on the severity for each symptom evaluated after 7 days of treatment compared to before taking the product. Secondary outcomes included decrease on TNSS and severity for each symptom evaluated after 3 and 5 days of treatment compared to before; changes of nasal symptoms measured with nasal scores or VNRS assessed at baseline and during the treatment period.RESULTS: One hundred fifty subjects participated in the survey. The MD significantly reduced TNSS already after 3 days (P<0.0001). In addition, the MD significantly reduced all parameters over time (P<0.0001). The safety was good for all patients.CONCLUSIONS: The present survey documented the efficacy and safety of Sinulind® Meerwasser Nasenspray + Aloe Vera in treating nasal symptoms common to upper respiratory tract disorders. Most of the beneficial effects appeared as early as three days after treatment. Thus, Sinulind® Meerwasser Nasenspray + Aloe Vera may represent a safe and valuable option in non-pharmacological rhinitis therapy.
