Mobile Tiny House Water Treatment System: An Innovative, Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Solution for Rainwater and Greywater

With the population growth, rapidly increasing urbanization and poverty, exploitation of natural resources in the energy and water sector is growing excessively, enlarging the gap between supply and demand, and worsening the crisis for more resource abuse. Scientific communities are, nevertheless, developing new technologies in this field for more self-sufficiency and sustainability, where the focus on decentralization for water systems is growing and expanding as well. This paper presents the mobile tiny house treatment system, which harvests and treats rainwater and greywater autonomously to provide water used for the house’s domestic activities and for irrigation used in the vertical garden coupled to it. The entire house is mobile and the system is coupled to it. The process is autonomous, where rainwater is collected and used as freshwater, and greywater is treated by ceramic filtration and disinfected by ultraviolet lamps to be used then for irrigation. This project also investigates the quality of water settling in the tank before treatment and after its passage through the filtration and disinfection system. Samples were collected and tested for physio-chemical and microbiological parameters. The results revealed a decrease in water hardness and a safe disinfection after all tested harmful bacteria have been neutralized. The system’s self-sufficiency was proved after its implementation in Watwill, Switzerland, where visitor’s feedback was positive and encouraging, and the system generated approximately $108 \%$ of its annual energy consumption in-house, producing $2,657.3 \mathrm{kWh}$ over the course of a year. This project acts now as a role model and a basis to build new developed techniques for future implementation in the MENA region.
