A Wide Input AC/DC Flyback Converter for Media Converters and Other Low-Power Devices in Wired Communication Networks

Since the introduction of Ethernet in 1973 as a wired communication network to transfer digital data between two or more devices of a local group, its complete replacement with other technologies like single pair ethernet and optical fiber seems impossible. This is because of its maturity and flexibility. Therefore, the best solution so far has been to find a way to integrate new technologies into existing Ethernet infrastructures. This integration is possible with additional low-power devices such as media converters (MCs). Nevertheless, the introduction of MC brings in additional power requirements. With the difference in the mains voltage and frequency in various countries, inclusiveness needs to be considered. This paper elaborates on the design and simulation of a 5V 1A AC/DC flyback converter (FBC) to power typical media converters and other low-power devices in today’s complex telecommunication networks. The FBC is designed to operate with a wide AC input voltage ranging from 85Vrms to 285Vrms, allowing it to be used everywhere. The LT8315 is used to control the regulation of the converter. Simulation of the designed FBC was done using LTSPICE, and the results showed the robustness of the converter in being able to supply steady 5V, 1A, despite the variation in the AC input voltage.
