Abstract Rehabilitation psychologists have an important role in characterizing cognitive dysfunction impacting functioning and affecting quality of life. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of rehabilitation psychologists’ approach to cognitive assessment and interventions for cognitive dysfunction. The authors discuss factors to consider in a cognitive assessment including what type of assessment to complete, involving treatment team members, and accounting for nonstandardized administration. Issues of decisional capacity, cultural considerations, and accommodations are discussed. The concept of neuropsychological rehabilitation is introduced, with an emphasis on explaining how cognitive rehabilitation can be incorporated into a broader, interdisciplinary treatment plan. An overview of existing evidence-based interventions is provided with suggestions for future research. Ethical considerations such as understanding one’s competence in cognitive assessment, cultural factors, performance validity, and improving access via advocacy are addressed. Tables are included to assist the reader in reviewing causes of cognitive dysfunction, sample tests, typical assessment goals, principles and components of neuropsychological rehabilitation, and an overview of systematic reviews of cognitive rehabilitation in recent years.
