New Herzogsteg Footbridge over the Altmühl, Eichstätt

<p>The new Herzogsteg bridge over the Altmühl in Eichstätt, Germany, connecting the old and new towns, is an impressive, slender, integral reinforced concrete structure that blends perfectly into the cityscape. Flood protection and accessibility requirements for the city centre were key design parameters and led to a streamlined cross-section in structural concrete without further sealing or covering. The durability of the structure is ensured by a suitable concrete compopsition, the use of stainless steel reinforcement (‘Top 12’, material no. 1.4003) and deep hydrophobization. Due to the ‘cast stone’ nature of the structure, low maintenance, repair and thus low life cycle costs are to be expected. </p>
