MPD Case History from the Extreme HPHT Fenris Field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf

Abstract The drilling of the first production wells on the 2/4 Fenris field, on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS), highlights the successful application of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) to overcome extreme High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) challenges. With reservoir pressures up to 1050 bar and temperatures reaching 185°C, the Fenris field demanded precise solutions and diligent planning to navigate the extreme HPHT challenges and mitigate well control risks. MPD was utilised to mitigate risks for the following critical operations: Drilling the 12 1/4″ section, requiring careful TD setting into the HPHT pressure ramp with full volume control and accurate bottom hole pressure. Drilling the 8 1/2″ reservoir section, navigating a narrow drilling window, utilising open-hole FITs and dynamic pore pressure tests. Cementing the reservoir liner, utilising Managed Pressure Cementing (MPC) with precise pressure management and model accuracy. This paper outlines the planning phase, operational strategies, procedures, training, influx detection and management, system performance, and lessons learned, providing a framework for future HPHT & MPD campaigns.
