»A Program of Compositions by Harry Partch«. Das Konzert vom 3. Mai 1945 im Kontext des Third May Music Festival der University of Wisconsin in Madison

Harry Partchs Portraitkonzert im Rahmen des May Music Festival an der University of Wisconsin-Madison 1945 ist bisher nur für sich stehend und ohne Bezugnahme auf die anderen Anlässe dieser Veranstaltung betrachtet worden. Dabei ist Partch in seiner Zeit in Madison 1944–1947 keineswegs der einzige interessante Gast, sondern die Universität auf musikalischem Gebiet fast eine Arche Noah des europäischen Exils. So entstammt der für Partchs temporäre Anbindung an die Universität entscheidende Pianist Gunnar Johansen der Berliner Busoni-Schule, und das ursprünglich aus dem Brüsseler Konservatorium hervorgegangene und – immer wieder verjüngt – bis heute in Madison beheimatete Pro Arte Quartet hat 1944 gerade Schönbergs Wiener Schwager und künstlerischen Weggefährten Rudolf Kolisch als Primarius aufgenommen. Während des Festivals gespielt werden allerneueste Werke der Exileuropäer Bartók, Hindemith, Milhaud und Stravinsky ebenso wie solche von zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Komponisten. Dieser Beitrag unternimmt anhand des in seinem Anhang abgedruckten Gesamtprogramms von 1945 und eines Überblicks über die Entwicklung des Festivals 1943–1947 den Versuch einer weiteren Kontextualisierung Partchs im Umfeld von Madison. Streiflichter auf die Rahmenbedingungen der Entwicklung der School of Music der University of Wisconsin-Madison runden das Bild ab. Harry Partch’s portrait concert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s May Music Festival in 1945 has thus far only been considered in its own right, without any reference to the other events of the Festival. But Partch was by no means the only interesting guest active in Madison from 1944 to 1947. The University was a veritable Noah’s Ark of European exiles—and not only in the field of music. The pianist Gunnar Johansen had spent much time in Berlin in Busoni’s circle, and it was he who was decisive in organising Partch’s temporary affiliation to the University. The Pro Arte Quartet had its origins at the Brussels Conservatory, but remains resident in Madison to this day (albeit in a younger incarnation after the usual generational turnover of players). In 1944, the Quartet had just appointed Rudolf Kolisch as its leader – a man who was both Schoenberg’s brother-in-law and his artistic companion-in-arms. The Festival also featured the latest works by Europeans in exile – Bartók, Hindemith, Milhaud and Stravinsky – along with new works by contemporary American composers. This essay aims to provide additional context for Partch in Madison by examining the complete 1945 Festival programme (printed here in an appendix) and by offering an overview of the development of the Festival from 1943 to 1947. We round off our survey by considering the prevailing circumstances during the development of the School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
