New ASCE MOP on Design of Overhead Power Line and Substation Foundations

This paper, written on behalf of the ASCE Technical Committee (TC) on the Design of Overhead Line and Substation Foundations, outlines the contents of the upcoming Manual of Practice (MOP) on Foundations. Overhead power lines and substations require foundation designs distinct from those used in buildings and other infrastructure, yet no uniform industry standard currently exists. This MOP provides the best practices for the analysis, design, and construction of foundations for overhead power lines and substations. The committee conducted an industry survey to compile current practices and standards. The MOP includes 18 chapters and 4 appendices, covering foundation selection, design philosophy and methodologies, and special conditions. It details various foundation types emphasizing reliability based design approaches over traditional allowable stress design methods.
