An Innovative Precast Concrete Foundation Solution for Steel Latticed Towers

While precast spun concrete shafts (PSCSs) are a common structure type for supporting transmission lines, their application as a foundation for steel latticed towers presents unique engineering, fabrication, and installation challenges for which solutions are described in this paper. Both full-scale structure testing and pilot field installation were conducted to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of PSCS foundations in supporting latticed steel towers. The successful development of this innovative foundation required close collaboration between American Electric Power (AEP), fabricator Valmont Utility, and contractor Quanta. Insights gained from this collaborative effort are crucial for advancing the use of precast spun concrete shafts in future projects.
