Lab-based neutron sources and instruments

Introduction to fast (2.5 MeV DD and 14 MeV DT) neutron sources and moderated thermal neutron sources for lab-based applications. Applications for thermal neutrons include small angle neutron scattering (SANS), neutron reflectometry, neutron diffractometry, radiography & tomography, refractive neutron lens imaging, and capture and activation gamma analysis. Applications of fast neutrons include associated particle imaging (API), radiography & tomography, prompt and delayed gamma analysis. Thermal neutron sources are used in residual stress analysis based on neutron diffraction. Presented is an Adelphi-MIT collaboration on a multiplexing analyzer instrument, where initial experimental results are presented.
