Edge effects mitigation in phase-diversity wavefront sensing and imaging algorithm

This paper will address findings on wavefront sensing and image enhancement using phase-diversity algorithm on extended scenes leveraging windows to mitigate the edge effects. We will present two methods of phase-diversity, one designated as Joint estimation where the pristine object and the wavefront are estimated simultaneously, and another dubbed Sequential estimation where the wavefront is estimated first and, then, the pristine object estimate follows. We will show that the Joint technique outperforms the sequential technique, both in the residual wavefront sensing and the enhanced image quality. The key advantage of the Joint method, being implemented in the spatial domain, stems from its amenability to application of a window function which can alleviate the deleterious edge effects. The Sequential technique does not enjoy such level of window function leveraging since it is expressed mainly in the frequency domain.
