Abstract This article is designed to provide an introductory understanding of the rules and regulations that govern cryptocurrency and digital asset exchanges. It will provide from the perspective of two experts at a leading crypto trading platform a high-level, non-exhaustive review of the international laws and compliance requirements affecting trading in various jurisdictions. We will summarize the international regulation of exchanges, looking at how different countries are regulating centralized exchanges. The article will also discuss exchange registration and licencing requirements, giving an insight to what is required for those exchanges to operate legally. We will highlight some of the relevant exchange compliance obligations, specifically related to topics such as know your customer/anti-money laundering, suspicious activity monitoring and reporting, security and data protection, as well as localized liquidity requirements, rules on marketing and promotion, consumer duties, asset segregation, market abuse, insider dealing, and margin trading. Additionally, we will give a summary of the taxation of crypto trading, highlighting how different jurisdictions tax digital asset transactions. Finally, we will look at cross-border exchange activity, addressing the legal complexities of trading across national borders. Readers will gain an introductory knowledge that will assist in navigating the evolving landscape of the exchange of digital assets and cryptocurrencies.
