Data driven analysis of underground MV joint failure phenomena in the Italian distribution grid

Energy transition and climate change are posing new challenges to the DSOs, requiring investments for a more reliable and resilient distribution infrastructure. In urban areas MV lines are the backbone of the distribution system and data shows as effect of summer heatwaves on the MV underground joints is the main critical issue for DSOs. The phenomenon is very complex, considering the several possible influencing factors, therefore six Italian DSO, representing around 95% of the national distribution system, put together failures data to perform statistical analysis to better understand it and steer possible mitigation actions. The analysis shows as contemporary peak of temperatures, drought and loads explains the seasonality of the phenomenon, and as some technical solution can mitigate it, but more data and deeper analysis are essential to improve resilience of this strategic infrastructure.
