Estimating the plastic elongation of overhead lines using clamp-on DLR-sensors

This paper studies inclination and temperature data collected from 15 clamp-on dynamic line rating (DLR) sensors and proposes three approaches for finding a reference conductor length and thermal expansion coefficient. These two parameters are important for predicting the dynamic line rating of overhead lines (OHLs), where ground clearance constraints are the limiting factor. Of the three approaches studied, an adaptive Bayesian approach where the parameters are updated as more data becomes available was found to give the most accurate DLR predictions. This finding indicates that it is beneficial to account for the plastic elongation of OHLs to maintain DLR predictions accuracy over the conductor's lifespan. By addressing this, we aim to contribute to the safe and efficient utilization of the OHL capacity, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable electricity grid.
