“I just don’t know if I can do it”: A qualitative exploration of how owners contemplate whether to relinquish their companion dog

Abstract Background: Relinquishment of companion dogs is a major global animal welfare issue, with dog behaviour a commonly reported factor. Key to reducing relinquishment is an understanding of how people come to the decision to relinquish dogs. In this study, we address this need by using in-depth interviews to explore the relinquishment decision making experience of UK dog owners, most of whom were struggling with their dog’s behaviour. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 people, who had either relinquished, had considered relinquishing, or were currently considering relinquishment, primarily due to unwanted dog behaviour. Interview transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Two primary themes were constructed: (1) ‘a last resort when hope is gone’, and (2) ‘navigating conflicting feelings’. This analysis highlights the lengths to which owners will go to avoid relinquishment and points to the emotional toll taken on owners navigating the dilemma of whether to keep or relinquish their dog. Conclusions: Discussing these findings, we offer suggestions for developing support for owners experiencing challenges in keeping their dogs or ultimately relinquishing them.
