The rapid expansion of shale gas development has led to an increasing number of wells requiring artificial lift to sustain economic production. Range Resources, operating in this dynamic environment, has observed a growing inventory of plunger lift wells in the Marcellus Shale that demand consistent and optimal plunger lift functionality to maintain well performance. Traditional operational strategies, such as static time-based control and heavy human involvement, offer ease of implementation but fall short in truly optimizing production, especially in environments where well and system behavior is continually changing. With the ratio of wells to personnel ever growing, a scalable solution was also at the forefront of discussion in solving this problem. To address this, Range Resources sought a strategic solution that could scale across a broad set of assets without the need for additional hardware or increased manpower. The objective was twofold: deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to manage plunger lift wells autonomously, and refocus in-house engineering and operations personnel on higher-value tasks. Following initial discussions centered on rod lift applications in 2019, Ambyint presented InfinityPL, a tailored plunger lift optimization solution to Range Resources. This marked the beginning of a collaborative, data-driven transformation in how plunger lift wells are monitored and optimized, with full scale deployment in 2022.
