Research on the Construction of Harry Potter IP Industry Chain

This study investigates the construction of the Harry Potter intellectual property (IP) industry chain as a paradigmatic case of global cultural IP development. Drawing on theories of transmedia storytelling, complex narrative, and participatory culture, the paper examines how the franchise evolved from literary origins into a multilayered ecosystem spanning books, films, games, merchandise, theme parks, and immersive experiences. The analysis highlights four key success factors: the narrative and commercial value of the original works, comprehensive copyright control and authorization mechanisms, synergistic global marketing and vertical industrial integration, and sustained fan engagement through digital communities. At the same time, the research identifies major challenges, including risks of over-commercialization, conflicts between artistic integrity and commercial interests, and difficulties of cultural translation and localization. By synthesizing these dynamics, the paper provides insights for the sustainable development of Chinas film and cultural IP industry, emphasizing the importance of long-term narrative investment, systematic world-building, cross-media expansion, and community co-creation.
