Development and Validation of a Helmholtz Resonator Model for Industrial Noise Control: Advancing from Static to Mean Flow Analysis

Helmholtz resonators are used in industrial noise control to reduce unwanted tonal noise in duct systems. This study presents the development of a numerical model for these resonators under static conditions. The static model, implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics, was calibrated and validated using experimental data from three silencer prototypes with different perforation configurations. A key element of the research was the accurate determination of the effective neck length correction-a parameter that remained consistent across configurations and is essential for predicting resonance frequency and attenuation characteristics. Building on this validated static model, the next phase will integrate mean flow effects using ANSYS to capture convective influences on acoustic propagation. This extension aims to quantify the impact of fluid convection on resonator performance and to provide further insights into fluid-acoustic interactions. The anticipated results are expected to enhance the predictive capability of the resonator model and support the optimization of noise mitigation strategies in industrial duct applications.
