Evaluation of the Impact of Speed on Noise Emission from Mining Trucks

In the context of mining operations, the noise generated by haulage trucks is especially relevant when the mine is located in areas close to the community, as there are regulations that protect them from excessive noise. In this study, the relationship between circulation speed and noise emission from mining trucks was evaluated, based on an operational restriction imposed under the premise that a lower speed would reduce noise emission levels. Field measurements were carried out for three operating speeds: 35, 45 and 55 km/h, using a monitoring methodology in real working conditions. The results obtained showed that there is no direct correlation between lower speed and lower noise emissions. On the contrary, in many cases, noise levels were lower at higher speeds. These findings question the effectiveness of speed restrictions as a noise control strategy and highlight the need for evidence-based approaches to acoustic management in mining operations.
