Use of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (toceranib phosphate) for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma in a giant otter ( <i>Pteronura brasiliensis</i> )

Abstract Toceranib phosphate, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has been documented to be useful for the treatment of a variety of neoplasms in companion animal medicine. The tolerability and efficacy of this drug in non‐domestic species, however, are largely unknown. A giant otter ( Pteronura brasiliensis ) with a non‐resectable squamous cell carcinoma associated with the abdominal wall in the left inguinal region exhibited a partial response to treatment with toceranib phosphate for 5 months. The use of this drug was well tolerated and could be useful for the management of primary or metastatic neoplasia in Lutrinae species and other non‐domestic carnivores, in cases where surgery is not feasible.
