Acoustic Requirements for the Design of Multifunctional Arenas

Multifunctional arenas designed for indoor sports and large-audience musical performances are common in Europe and the United States but remain rare in Brazil. Characterized by high ceilings and large internal volumes, these venues pose significant acoustic challenges, including multiple internal and external sound sources, echo incidence, excessive reverberation, and other phenomena that directly impact the experience of spectators and attendees. Despite the importance of this issue, the available literature and technical standards, both national and international, do not provide specific acoustic design parameters for these spaces. This study aims to discuss the main acoustic constraints involved in the design of multifunctional arenas and propose minimum parameters, such as acceptable noise levels and appropriate reverberation times. The methodology is based on a literature review, an analysis of acoustic parameters observed in existing arenas, a study of national and international standards, and a comparative analysis supporting the proposal of acoustic design guidelines for multifunctional arenas. The expected outcomes include defining minimum acoustic design parameters, encompassing noise level limits and reverberation times, contributing to the improvement of acoustic quality in these environments.
