Blockchain-based Token Platforms for Incentivizing Citizen Science: Case of the YOMA Reward Token

This article presents the blockchain-based YOMA token platform, which incentivizes participation in communitydriven citizen science initiatives. The system introduces a modular, gasless architecture that enables transparent and verifiable reward mechanisms using ERC-20 tokens, while integrating with off-chain voucher systems. A key contribution lies in the integration of decentralized token management with off-chain redemption mechanisms, enabling token holders to redeem rewards in external e-commerce ecosystems. The architecture includes components such as proxy relayers, encrypted voucher delivery, and token lifecycle management to ensure usability, security, and auditability. We have evaluated the platform in the context of a large-scale clean water challenge in Nigeria, demonstrating its ability to engage users, ensure fair token distribution, and support the delivery of real-world incentives. The results suggest that such systems can serve as a foundation for broader applications aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, such as access to clean water, quality education, and economic opportunity.
