Importance of Numerical Aspects in Mesoscale Microstructure Modeling of Porous Electrodes

Porous electrode microstructure modeling is increasingly used to simulate electrochemical processes, but both physical and numerical factors can introduce errors in the approximated porous electrode geometry and predicted cell capacity. This work quantifies such effects and outlines numerical studies needed to minimize these errors. Five key aspects are investigated: (1) resolution of reconstructed electrode volumes, (2) element density in spatial discretization, (3) mesh type, (4) computational domain size, and (5) solver tolerance. Understanding and addressing these aspects improves the accuracy and reliability of porous electrode microstructure-based electrochemical simulations.
