Seismic Vulnerability in Myanmar:Estimating Foundations of New Buildings and Evaluating Collapse Risk of Existing Structures

Myanmar is a country with access to sea and located within the seismically active and complex region of Asia. Due to the negligence structural safety and inadequate considerations of soil conditions during foundation section, many communities in Myanmar still vulnerable to earthquakes. This study presents an Earthquake-Resilient Housing Foundation Recommender and Risk Assessment Tool, designed to support safer construction practices. A risk index model is presented to quantify the vulnerability of housing structures under different seismic events. By combining geotechnical data with engineering-based foundation design parameters, the system recommends appropriate foundation types and delivers an accessible framework for evaluating risk. The outcomes of this study intend to reduce structural failure, enhance community resilience in seismically active regions of Myanmar.
