Examining the underpinnings of political behavior among naturalized African immigrants in North America

Naturalized citizenship confers a range of civil and political rights, enabling full rights to participate in political discourse, engage in advocacy, and exercise civic duties typically reserved for native-born citizens. Global research provides valuable insights into political engagement among both naturalized and native-born populations; however, much of the existing scholarship disproportionately emphasizes certain immigrant groups, leaving others, such as African naturalized citizens, overlooked. This review addresses the gap by examining the socio-cognitive and developmental factors that shape political thinking and behavior among African naturalized immigrants. It highlights the collective influence of belief systems, familial backgrounds, cultural contexts, and intra-family relationships in the formation of political perspectives and behaviors. Findings suggest that conditions of development, mental interpretations, deeply ingrained behaviors, and degrees of political power in a community inform political thinking and drive political choices. Furthermore, constructs that predict political behaviors in elite communities are not effective in predicting behavior patterns in diverse, multicultural communities. It stresses re-evaluating prevailing assumptions about political group identity and participation. It advocates for a nuanced investigation into the internal political reasoning of other specific immigrant groups to support the development of inclusive, value-based policies that transcend broad ideological generalizations.
