Decarbonizing Industrial Heat with Heat Pumps

Industrial heat pumps have significant potential in reducing energy consumption and achieving net zero by 2050. Although the initial cost is high, the benefits make these investments worthwhile. Heat pumps require regular maintenance and can be highly reliable to growing heating demands with necessary control logic. The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy can be created or destroyed, but its quantity remains stable within a system. Primary energy, such as electricity and fossil fuels, is used in factories, with less than 20% used by prime movers or lighting facilities. This energy is degraded to lower quality energy when converted into chemical energy. Most primary energy ends up as waste heat, which increases the building's interior air temperature. In most industries, only a small portion of primary energy is converted into chemical energy in the final product. Input materials used in manufacturing are usually at the same temperature as output products when leaving the plant. The majority of primary energy ends up as waste heat, which is often lost through stacks, cooling towers, and sewage.
