Metformin and Myo-Inositol: A Comparative Analysis

Myo-inositol has a more acceptable safety profile than metformin, which is known to be associated with gastrointestinal adverse effects and, in rare cases, lactic acidosis. Myo-inositol is a naturally present molecule in physiological conditions, which underlines its importance in a variety of biological functions, as opposed to the strict pharmacological action of metformin. The safety profile of these molecules seems quite different since data, even if incomplete, sustain high tolerance of myo-inositol, while the safety of metformin use during pregnancy is still controversial.
