Ice Dynamic Observation with Remote Sensing

During the High North hydro-oceanographic campaigns in the Arctic, one of the main challenges is planning the ship’s routes to reach the areas of interest while ensuring the vessel’s safety. During the High North24 campaign, recent internet connectivity technologies, even in remote areas such as the Arctic, enable rapid downloading of satellite data for onboard processing. Near-real-time information on ice distribution, concentration, drift speed and ice types were derived. Moreover, extensive observation, sampling, and ice characterization activities, using UAV acquisition, in situ collections and laboratory analysis, were carried out to enhance the understanding of this extreme environment that poses significant operational challenges.
