Eliminating the Nurse-to-Patient Power Gradient Through Effective Communication to Combat Avoidable Suffering

A unique and complex aspect of communication in the operating room department is the nurse-to-patient power gradient. The patient under anesthesia is dependent on the perioperative nurse to collaborate with the surgical team and communicate on their behalf, and this creates a significant power differential with the patient in a uniquely vulnerable and powerless position. Thus, nurse-to-patient power gradients must be extinguished, and patients need to know they are valued and active participants in their care. The perioperative nurse as an empowered advocate, educator, nurturer, and communicator can eliminate avoidable patient suffering across all phases of perioperative care.
