Development of New Materials for Improved Na-Ion Batteries

The increasing interest in sodium-containing materials in recent years has been driven by the rapid development of sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), which are considered potential successors to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) [1], particularly for LFP batteries. Additionally, the recent evolution of the battery market, with an equal market share between LFP and NMC, has further reinforced the interest in Na-ion batteries. However, to become truly competitive, the energy density of these batteries needs to be significantly increased on a large scale [2]. To achieve this goal, Arkema has developed specific binders to enhance the rheological, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of Na-ion battery electrodes. In this presentation, the benefits of Arkema binders for high-energy-density electrodes will be demonstrated through slurry rheological behaviors, electrode characterizations, and electrochemical performances.
