Small airway disease and coronary artery disease in COPD: Bayesian interim analysis of the ARCADIA study

<bold>Background:</bold> ARCADIA (<ext-link>ISRCTN49392136</ext-link>) is a 52-week prospective, multicentre, pilot, observational, cohort study to assess the relationship between cardiovascular and small airway disease (SAD) in COPD (1). Aim To assess the correlation between residual volume (RV), which is suggestive of SAD, and coronary artery disease (CAD) in COPD. Methods A Bayesian interim analysis of ARCADIA study was performed on RV and CAD. BF+0 measures the positive Bayesian Factor in favor of H+. Larger values of BF+0 indicate more support for the hypothesis that SAD is correlated with CAD. Results Data form 202 out of 573 enrolled COPD patients were analyzed (Table 1). Moderate positive correlation resulted between RV and CAD (Pearson’s r 0.16, 0.03–0.31; max BF+0 4.10) (Figure 1). Conclusions This is the first study to provide the probability of evidence regarding the importance of RV as a tool to predict the presence of CAD in COPD using the Bayesian inference. 1.
