Nutritional Programming of the Infant Gut Microbiome: Evidence from Global and Latin American Contexts

Early-life nutrition plays a decisive role in shaping the establishment and functional maturation of the infant gut microbiome, a rapidly evolving ecosystem with profound implications for immune development, metabolic programming, and long-term health. This review integrates findings from recent international research to examine how maternal diet, breastfeeding patterns, human milk oligosaccharides, and the timing and composition of complementary feeding influence microbial trajectories during the first 1,000 days of life. Across the evidence, breastfeeding consistently emerges as a strong protective factor, supporting the dominance of beneficial taxa and fostering an anti-inflammatory microbial environment. Complementary feeding introduced between four and six months, particularly when based on minimally processed, fiber-rich foods, is associated with optimal short-chain fatty acid production and accelerated microbiome maturation. In contrast, early exposure to ultra-processed foods disrupts microbial stability and is linked to increased risks of allergies, metabolic disturbances, and gastrointestinal disorders. Regional comparisons among Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador reveal that cultural feeding practices meaningfully shape microbiota wellbeing indicators, with traditional diets and higher breastfeeding prevalence supporting more favorable microbial profiles. Collectively, the findings underscore early-life nutrition as a critical determinant of microbial development and a powerful lever for promoting healthier childhood outcomes across diverse populations.
