The Use of Enrichment to Improve the Welfare of Mbu Pufferfish ( <i>Tetraodon Mbu</i> ) Provided by Hobbyists

Abstract Despite advances in fish welfare research, enrichment for companion fish such as the Mbu pufferfish is often dismissed due to the complexities of fishkeeping. However, providing suitable environments can promote the longevity and survival of human-kept species, and offering enrichment can enhance the cognitive abilities of Tetraodontiformes. This case study considers the specific needs that the largest freshwater pufferfish, the Mbu, have in an aquarium setting. Following an individual who spent long periods inactive at the bottom of the tank, this case outlines what can be provided to improve overall welfare. Known for their unique personality and behaviours, social media has increased their popularity as aquatic pets. As admiration for the species grows, both new and existing owners must be equipped to provide high standards of welfare and maintain these animals’ well-being and mental stimulation by utilising enrichment methods.
