Future Developments of the Pulsed Power System for the Orion High Power Laser

The Orion Laser Facility at AWE has been operating since 2010, studying high energy density physics utilising 10 long pulse beamlines and 2 short pulse beamlines. The energy for the amplification of the laser comes from a set of capacitor banks which produce a combined output of ∼10MJ at ∼22kV delivered to flash tubes or Faraday rotators. The system has been operating continuously for the past 15 years and systems have degraded in terms of reliability, availability, and capability. This paper will present in detail, what these projects consist of and how these will be expected to improve the metrics of our facility and possibly other facilities utilising similar pulsed power systems.
