Quantifying Hall Conductivity of the Inner MITL on Z

Particle simulations are an effective tool for modeling the magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITL) on Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine. However, a fluid-like understanding is desirable for analyzing behavior and would aid in designing new geometries that mitigate current loss. Previous analysis of PIC simulations of the inner MITL suggests that the Hall current plays a significant role in time-dependent current loss. In this work we use Weak Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (WSINDy), a data-driven model identification method, to quantify the Hall coefficient as a function of time and space in the inner MITL. The weak formulation of WSINDy allows us to perform this analysis without a smoothing or averaging step and work directly with fluid quantities calculated from the particle data. The Hall coefficient is learned for multiple inner MITL geometries and spatiotemporal regions of significance are identified. The end goal is a parameterization to represent how the geometry of the inner MITL relates to the Hall coefficient and the resulting current loss.
