The Evolving Complexity of Wellness Tourism: A Multidisciplinary Framework for Future Research

ABSTRACT The pursuit of a health‐oriented lifestyle, globally known as seeking wellness, is rapidly growing in all communities. The origins of wellness are ancient, but in terms of tourism studies, research on wellness tourism began in the 1990s. This study aims to make future‐oriented research suggestions for the rapidly growing field of wellness tourism. In this study, we propose a conceptual model for interdisciplinary research through a review of the existing literature. Models for wellness tourism research based on interdisciplinary integration can be developed by examining health‐related models and theories from various academic fields, incorporating complexity theory and interdisciplinary approach theory. The contribution of this paper is an increased understanding of the concept of interdisciplinary and integrative research, which can make research on wellness tourism more professional.
